Fired up at castle

PENDENNIS Castle in Falmouth is gave visitors the chance to see some of Europe's largest working cannons in action on Wednesday, August 27 and 28.

Over the two day event the roar of gunfire resonated around Falmouth Bay and conjure up the explosive atmosphere of a battleground, as visitors are taken on a tour through the evolution of weaponry.

Throughout the day there were demonstrations of a whole range of different artillery, all accompanied by an informative historical commentary.

The mortar Roaring Meg, in Civil War days the largest gun of its type in Europe and cannons similar to those on the Mary Rose.

The event culminated in the firing of the Long Tom, a US Second World War field gun with a 14 mile range, unique to Pendennis Castle.
